Happy New Years from Hair Care Discounters

Wow I cannot believe the New Years is already here, and not only is it a brand new decade, but we are also now in a brand new season for hair.  Or at least starting to get a glimpse as to what we should expect for early spring hair and spring hair styles, colors, fashions and trends.

Now I know Valentines Day hasn’t even happened yet and most of us are still recovering from New Years Eve but I am soo excited with the big hair this winter because what we could start to expect to see for Valentines Day and then moving into the spring hair and fashion season is big shiney and curly hair.

Now I am not talking about high hair or over permed hair since that is completely out, but hair that looks like Kim’s wig from the Real Housewives of Atlanta on Bravo.  Gorgeous big beuatiful blond shiney curls that not only look amazing but also work to help show off how gorgeous your face, cheekbones, etc…. all look.  Heck, even on the Biggest Looser season finale or near finale show last night, the hostess was wearing some gorgeous big and beautiful curls with her amazing looking blonde hair as well.

Anyways, I am loving the way it looks because if I am guessing correctly, we’ll see the hair start to straighten out for the spring, but still be curly and by summer get to see 90’s hair like short pixie cuts, assymetric bobs and a ton of other really cool styles, colors and highlights coming back full force.

Now, if you want this gorgeous shiney big and beautiful hair that everyone is wearing and to match the strapped dresses that have also made a comeback for Valetine’s Day, then there are a few products I would like to recommend.  Now, on a side note, these shampoos are not designed specifically or Color Treated hair, but are fabulous for helping to add volume so you can then go and get your hair styles, but you should use styling products like a solid Mousse for curly hair to hold you hair in place.

important things to remember when dieting

So I have been dieting for a couple weeks and am starting to get into shape for my trip to California.  The thing that I noticed though that I did not expect was that my skin and hair would dry out.  I am sure it had something to do with my flu and drying me out but what I learned was to amp up my hydrating conditioners for my hair and use a stronger moisturizer.

Now, I am not saying that you should do this, but I noticed this morning that my skin just looked really dehydrated and my was healthy but was starting to dry.  The worst though was when I opened my cucumber and tonic mask (we don’t carry this one yet) and it had dried so I couldn’t deep clean and tighten but thank gosh my spf 17 moisturizer was still in tact.

So when I noticed all of this I decided that dry skin and dry hair is not ok and I took action.  This might not work for you since everyone has different skin types, but I took my other deep cleaning mask, mixed in some honey and started to clean my face.  I then took my moisturizer and applied it to my face.  I then went jogging and when I came back I showered and cleaned my face then applied another round of my spf 17 moisturizer and in the shower I used my sample of Alterna Ten Conditioner and Moroccan Oil and although my face started to look a lot healthier, my hair looked 100% amazing and completely back to health.  I should have taken pictures ahead of time because the shots would have been amazing.  If you have not tried the Alterna Ten Conditioner or MoroccanOil Oil Treatments yet, you seriously are missing what is in my opinion an amazing combination of products and my hair looks and feels like it is a million times better.  It seriously was an amazing difference and I am going to swear by these products now.

Getting the Volume Back in Your Hair is Easy

Has your hair started to go limp.  Is it hard to manage and basically deflated.  Are you tired of a bob that lays flat or curls that fall out and just dangle?  Well chances are your hair just needs to be recharged and revitalized with some serious volume.

The first thing you should think about and ask yourself is:

  • What have I done differently to my hair that could have caused it to go flat?
  • What did I do that could have damaged my hair?
  • When was the last time I used a hair treatment or Hair Mask?
  • Did I change products and try something new?
  • What did I do differently recently or what Chemicals or Changes in Temperature could have effected your hair and made it go flat?
  • How often do I style my hair?

There are soo many volume shampoos and conditioners available today and they are soo hard to choose from.  They all do different things and many have different ingredients.  The on thing that volume Shampoos and Conditioners do have in common is the same goal.  To get your hair back up with a ton of volume, body and fullness and so instead of listing a couple hundred shampoos and conditioners (ok that was a bit of an exaggeration) I am going to mention a few brands that are designed for this and then you can pick the one that stands out the most for you and which one you think may work best for your hair.  All of the Volume Shampoo and Conditioners do the same thing, so pick the one that you feel will be best for you and fit your price range, however, remember that I still stand by not all shampoos and conditioners are created equal, ones like Alterna The Science of Ten and Kerastase (Which are available on our site as well) are amazing and have some of the best ingredients in the world and in my opinion are more than worth the extra money and work a lot better on your hair, however pick one that is for Volume and in your price range and begin using it as instructed on the bottle.  Not as you want to because overuse can actually do even more damage.   If you want to try one of the Volume Shampoos or Conditioners that I recommend, click on the pictures to the left and you’ll be taken to the product page, then go and buy the complimentary Shampoo or Conditioner to it as well.

Soo suppose this is still not what is causing the deflation or boring dull hair.  What else can you do to help stop your hair from deflating and get back that volume and hold.  The one thing that I see over and over again, and I used to do is that people are using the wrong styling products to get their hair to hold up to humidity and hold their volume and curls or stop their hair from deflating. The most common product I see being used which is also one that won’t be able to do what you want is hairspray.

Although hairspray is amazing and will start holding you at the beginning of your day, it is not made for holding your curls for styling or your hair high by itself.  It is however perfect for keeping your style in place and locking it into place so that your hair can hold its shape all day, so although I don’t recommend it for being the base of your hair style, it is still important to use a hairspray to hold your hair style in place and help keep it from deflating.

This is where the other products out there come back from the store.  Most people skip over them or have seen their parents use them and never want to give them a try, however, this could be why your hair style does not hold and why your volume does not last all day and why your curls fall out.  Products like, Mousse, Volume Leave in Conditioners and Styling Conditioners and Volume Sprays get passed over when people as people shop and it is an absolute mistake because these are the products that are designed for big hair, curly hair and hair that wants volume and to stay inflated all day.  Hairspray can help to keep it in place and keep your hair style in shape, but these products are the ones that help create the style and hold it for as long as you want it big and beautiful.

There are a ton of products out there to help you not only repair your hair and repair your hair’s volume, but there are also products out there that will help you style your hair and hold the volume and body that you want.  The most important thing to remember is to find one that works with your hair and to make sure that you treat your hair correctly because if your hair is happy and healthy and treated with care, your hair will also be able to be styled, have volume and life and you will begin to love it again.

Creating Wavy Hair With a Flat Iron – Fast and Easy!

So people always think that flat irons are used for straightening your hair, however Flat Irons are actually a multi-purpose tool that can be used to help you create those amazing waves too.

Using your flat iron to create wavey hair is actually very easy to do and once you get the hang of it you’ll be able to turn your straight hair into wavey hair in no time at all.

The first thing to do is to heat your iron, our preferred Hair Iron for doing this is the Babyliss Pro Nano Titanium Flat Iron as it has ceramic plates to help with your hair, heats quickly and helps to prevent frizz.

While your iron heats up, blow out your hair so that it is dry enough for you to style.  You may also want to use MoroccanOil or another repair product when using heated styling products to help protect your hair from damage.

When you have your hair dried and ready for styling, start with the front of your hair at the top and take your heated flat iron down your hair while flipping it at 180 degree turns.  This creates nice waves in your hair.  Work your hair around from the front to the back of your hair and when doing the back, you may want to set up a second mirror when you are first learning how to create waves so that you can see what you are doing.  When you have more practice, doing the back of your hair will become second nature for you and you’ll just know when it is done and matches he waves in the front of your hair.

Now if you want stronger waves and you weren’t able to get them on your first time around your hair.  Don’t keep doing the same strands over and over again.  What you should do so you cause less damage to your hair and get better style is to let the strand cool off and move on to the next section of your hair then once the original strands have cooled down, go back to them and begin the process of working your hair from top to bottom flipping the iron at 180 degree turns and your hair will begin to get those gorgeous waves back in your hair so that you can have gorgeous wavy hair like you see in hair commercials and when the actresses walk the red carpet.

Now, some other things you can do to enhance the look of your new wavey hair include using a hair oil afterwards like MoroccanOil which not only helps to repair damage, but also add in shine and health, (To use MoroccanOil Oil Treatment, pour a drop into your hands and rub it together in your palms then run it through your hair from top to bottom and let it stay there, do not rinse it out), or use a styling poduct like any of the Mousses or Volumizing products from Alterna Hemp to hold your hair from deflating and add in a natural shine from the Hemp Seed Oils that are in the Alterna Hemp Line.

Emmy Season is Here – But do you have award winning hair?

I can’t believe that it is already Emmy season again.  The awards are on September 20th 2009 this year and people are already getting their invites.  Last year was great where we had People like Kathy Griffin win her second Emmy and actually behave herself for the most part, completely out of character for her, and so many amazing dresses and hairstyles.   The thing I like most about the Emmys though are the parties that everyone throws and how some people get completely glammed up for these events.

How to create alternative hairstyles and be able to wash your hair.

So when I was looking through our product lines and thinking about something fun to write today, I realized that it is almost back to school time and for high school and college students that means new trends, new cliques and possibly finding new hobbies.

With those new groups of friends and new ideas thoughts or beliefs that come with them, a lot of times you find yourself buying new clothes to match your friends and their cliques or you do it because you hadn’t seen anything like it before and think it is just a really cool look.  However, with the new clothes and new looks comes new hairdos and hairstyles and with a new hairstyle, you sometimes need new products.

For example, if you had natural looks all through highschool or junior high, but you are now starting to listen to punk music or goth music and are dying your hair, your old shampoos and conditioners may not be as effective or good for your hair so you should start to look at color protecting shampoos and conditioners as well as color protecting styling products that help to repair and replenish your hair so that it is strong and healthy.

If you go blond for example, one of my favorite product lines for people who lighten their hair is TIGI and their Dumb Blonde Shampoo product however I used a different conditioner just because I liked the way the other conditioner smelled, even though it wasn’t a smart one to use on color treated hair.  I used to actually use them myself when I was a blond because they not only repaired my hair and made it safe to style and prevented the breakage and split ends from bleaching my hair to white, but it also did not stain or damage the color which many other products would have done.

You’re also going to want to use styling products that will actually help to repair and reverse the damage done by coloring it so that your hair does not start to break and fall out.  You need to be careful when you are using colors and chemicals if you have never dyed your hair before because they really can effect your hair and if you don’t buy products that repair the damage you can end up with tangled, dry and damaged hair, and if your styling products are not for colored hair either, your color could fade, you could further add to the damage and possible have your hair start to break and fall out.  So if you are dying your hair and still need to style it, I recommend looking at the Alterna Hemp styling products because they are infused with Hemp Seed Oil Extracts that actually help strengthen your hair and add shine back to your hair so it not only feels healthier, it also looks healthier and has more life to it.

Going back to school is a very exciting time for people and also a scary one for parents as you never know what your kids will come home looking like or what their hair will look like.  But just remember, they are still your kids and although you may not understand why they want rainbow hair or huge messy dreadlocks, you can at least protect their hair and help to reverse the damage done to it by getting them the correct products to properly repair the damage and get their hair looking healthy again.

Swimmers Hair and Chlorine Protection – What can you do?

So what I don’t get is why is everyone talking about swimmers hair or swimming hair?  I heard a woman make a comment to Lisa on the Real Housewives of Altanta on Bravo TV, My mom mentioned it to me on her visit down here, and I even had a friend in NYC talk to me about this last week at a party at Johnny Utahs.  They all had comments, suggestions, ideas or questions about the damage that is done by swimming pool chemicals like chlorine and what you can do to not only protect your hair and help reverse the damage done to your hair by swimming pools when swimming season is now over.

Well, then again it could be that people are now starting to see how the chlorine, bromine and other chemicals has destroyed their hair all Summer and are now wondering what they can do to repair this damage so they can go back to school with fabulous healthy looking hair and back to the workplace and prep for all of the harsh cold winter and brisk fall weather. Have no fear because we are hear to help you out, no matter what climate you live in.

First, in the Midwest and Northeast and Northwest swimming season still has a few weeks left before the pools shut down and it starts to get cold, and for those of you who live in Southern California, Florida or anywhere where swimming is good year round, this advice will be good for you as well.

The first and foremost most important thing to do before jumping into a pool is to water log your hair with water from the shower at the pool or in your own shower. By water logging your hair before you go in the pool with spring water or tap water from your shower (which has less chemicals than your pool or hot tub does) you will help in preventing the chemically treated water from getting into all of your hair and keep the cleaner safer water drenched inside so you get less damage done. I am not sure how this works because when you’re swimming you’d think that since your hair moves in the water it would soak up pool water too,,,,but for some reason many Stylists, Women and some Men swear by Water Logging your hair before you go into the pool or the hot tub. This does seem to work so we highly recommend you do this before going swimming for the rest of the season and every time afterwards.
